Barbie, Batman, Black Mirror — and yes, frock flicks. Jacqueline Durran’s costume design career is diverse. I can’t say I like everything she’s done that’s in a historical fashion, but maybe that’s due to the directors she works with. Durran has frequently collaborated with directors Greta Gerwig, Joe Wright, and Mike Leigh, and they’ve oft played fast and loose with history to tell their stories onscreen. Leigh has the strongest reputation for trying to capture a sense of reality on film, so the historical costume work Jacqueline Durran has done for him does appear the most historically detailed. Let’s run through Durran’s frock flick resume to compare and contrast!

What’s your favorite frock flick with costumes designed by Jacqueline Durran?
Belle’s yellow/gold dress is a boring and very 2017 bridesmaid! Her celebration/wedding dress is better, but still not 18th century.
Arianne Phillips should have been the big winner for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in 2019.
Stand up straight, Keira!!! Sorry, I couldn’t help it. :)
Little Women (2019) is an abomination in my opinion. I’ve seen the 1931, 1949, and 1994 versions and will always love the 1994.
