  1. It’s Pride month. Any recommendations for queer Frock Flicks? I already have Gentleman Jack and Pose on my lists.

    1. Definitely Wilde (1997)! It’s a great portrayal of Oscar Wilde’s life that sticks very close to the facts, the costumes are stunning, the cast is amazing (ft. Stephen Fry as Wilde, Jude Law as Bosie, Jennifer Ehle as Constance Wilde, Michael Sheen as Robbie Ross, and Vanessa Redgrave as Wilde’s mother), it’s just fantastic all around.

        1. I’m very new to all this and just found this site. Have you done any articles on the costumes in Black Sails? I searched and didn’t find any, but I wanted to ask just in case I overlooked one.

    2. I have a Filipino one. It is titled “Markova: Comfort Gay” (2000 ).

      The basic plot is :
“After watching a documentary about the suffering of “comfort women” forced into sexual slavery during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines, Walterina Markova decides to tell his own painful story to reporter Loren Legarda. Escaping the torment of growing up with an abusive older brother, he and his gay friends found further suffering at the hands of Japanese soldiers, forced as sex slaves to survive.”

Then continues the story of Walterina’s life from Post-World War 2 into the present day

I think it is available on Netflix ( though please check if it is available in your contury’s netflix)

  2. I saw Jeanne du Barry. Based on the trailer I didn’t expect much. And unsuprisingly, overall it’s MEH. Some bits/characters are really good in terms of costumes/hair/credibility (Marie Antoinette, Depp is not bad despite his accent in French, his valet is excellent) but many are WTF starting with du barry herself … hair down 90pc of the time, tragic costumes, bony traits … And the way they depict the French court and the courtiers who are against her is frankly manichean and ludicrous… another missed opportunity to depict this area!

  3. I recently watched Babylon(2022). Definitely a spectacle…didn’t dislike it, but I wish I had enjoyed it more.

Although I am no expert, Margot Robbie’s hair throughout looked really anachronous. Frizzy, messy waves, hair down- it looked like something from the 80’s at times. Going out on a limb and saying it doesn’t seem right for late 1920’s, early 30’s. I get that she was the “wild child”, but to me it just looked sloppy.

The music was good and I enjoyed Diego Calva’s arc and Robbie’s acting was entertaining as usual.

    Anyone else have thoughts?

  4. I was upset to learn that Hulu’s original movie “Rosaline” was purged at the end of May during Disney+ and Hulu’s grand purge. That movie only came out at the end of last year, and now it’s already gone. It was reviewed favorably on this site. I tried to watch it a few months ago, but I only lasted a half hour or so, but I put it down to being grumpy and in my mid-40s. (For example, when Romeo said, “My bad,” I just couldn’t take it anymore.) Even so, I’d planned to finish watching it one night when I was in a better mood. It seemed cute and benign overall. I’m sure if I were young, I’d like it. (I said the same thing about the first installment of Enola Holmes.)

Anyway, as someone who visits this site all the time, I’m constantly ADDING content to my “To Watch” list, and with the purging of Rosaline (a brand-new show), I’m agitated that now I’ll have to light a fire under myself to watch Frock Flicks content on these streaming platforms before they “disappear.” As in the case above with Rosaline, I like to watch these shows when I’m in the right “mood.” I don’t want to watch them under a deadline, as if I were a film critic needing to publish a review. I thought when HBO Max took The Nevers of its platform last year that was a one-off and also related to the whole ‘Joss Whedon is toxic’ phenomenon, but now it seems like our beloved Frock Flicks are just as perilous on these streaming platforms as everything else, and now I’m going to have to “prioritize” what I watch in addition to watching for sheer pleasure. First world problems, I know. But still…

    1. I didn’t know that! That’s so upsetting because I was thinking the other day that enough time had passed that maybe I would rewatch it. I thought it was very funny, if slightly anachronistic.

      1. That’s a shame! I thought it was really funny and leaned into the anachronisms.

  5. I just started Transatlantic the other day. I’m only one episode in, but the costumes are beautiful!

  6. Someone on Ebert.com recommended an erotic thriller called “Under Suspicion”, with Liam Neeson. It takes place in the late 1950’s, and from the looks of things, he gets to use his brogue (always a plus for me). Might have a couple of pink drinks while I watch. :)

  7. Has anyone seen the Teaser for Fellow Travelers? In time for Pride Month! About Lovers in the McCarthy era onwards!
