English actress Phoebe Fox hadn’t jumped to my attention despite her key role in The Great, but I came across a photo of her in another historical production and thought “Wait a second…” And as I often do, I went to see what else she had done, and was surprised to find she’s made some solid contributions to frock flicks! Let’s take a look:
Cordelia in King Lear (2012)
A live theater production filmed in London. Fox plays the favorite daughter of the mad king in this Shakespeare play.
Duchess of Savoy in The Musketeers (2014)
The fetish/crazily costumed loose adaptation of the Three Musketeers. The Duchess of Savoy was the sister of the king. She visits, gets involved in court politics, and links up with the musketeers when her life is in danger.
Liz Reitell in A Poet in New York (2014)
“A look at Welsh poet Dylan Thomas’s fatal visit to New York City, and his stormy relationship with his wife Caitlin,” per IMDB. Clearly the Liz character complicates things.
Eve Parkins in The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death (2014)
A group of children evacuated during World War II take refuge at a haunted house.
Vanessa Bell in Life in Squares (2015)
A BBC miniseries about the Bloomsbury Group. Bell was a painter and interior designer, and the sister of Virginia Woolf.
Anne in The Hollow Crown: Henry IV pt. 2 & Richard III (2016)
Anne as in Queen Anne Neville.
Kathy Griffiths in Close to the Enemy (2016)
Just post World War II, a German engineer has to work for the British.
Antonia in The Aeronauts (2019)
About exploring balloonists in 1862. Antonia is the lead female character’s sister.
Marial in The Great (2020-23)
Marial is a former noblewoman who’s been demoted to a serf in this not-trying-to-be-historically-accurate take on Catherine the Great of Russia. She’s a strong secondary character throughout.
What’s your favorite Phoebe Fox historical role?
I barely remember Woman in Black 2! I only remember that it was terrible!
