Viggo Mortensen is HOT. He’s not just pretty, but he’s got that voice that is SO seductive. He’s done a number of period films — yes, a lot of Westerns, but not all — so let’s count them down!
Lieutenant at LeBoeuf in George Washington (1984)
Someday, people, this will be my snark week recap. Someday.
John W. Poe in Young Guns II (1990)
Having just rewatched this, I gotta say, Mortensen doesn’t have a big role but he has a DRAWL that is H.O.T.
Cameron Dove in The Reflecting Skin (1990)
A horror film that “weaves elements of vampirism, surrealism, black comedy, symbolism, and religious zealotry throughout its narrative about the perceptions and fantasies of an impressionable young boy in 1950s America,” per Wikipedia.
Caspar Goodwood in The Portrait of a Lady (1996)
He’s the least annoying suitor of Isabel Archer.
Walker Jerome in A Walk on the Moon (1999)
Mortensen plays a hippie who livens up a wive’s life in 1969. I really should see this, shouldn’t I?
Frank Hopkins in Hidalgo (2004)
Based on a true story, about a ride for “wild west” shows who races his horse against Bedouins riding pure-blooded Arabians.
Diego Alatriste in Captain Alatriste: The Spanish Musketeer (2006)
A Spanish film, adapting the famous novels about a 17th-century adventurer and soldier. I find it interesting that Mortensen was in this! It’s one I’d like to watch, in the hopes that there’s some interesting female characters and costumes.
Everett Hitch in Appaloosa (2008)
Another horse film! An adaptation of a crime novel set in 1882.
Halder in Good (2008)
In the lead up to World War II, a German literature professor (Mortensen) becomes a nazi.
Sigmund Freud in A Dangerous Method (2011)
A film that follows the “turbulent relationships between Carl Jung, founder of analytical psychology, Sigmund Freud, founder of the discipline of psychoanalysis, and Sabina Spielrein, initially Jung’s patient and later a physician and one of the first female psychoanalysts.” The problem for us is that Keira Knightley stars, so none of us have bothered – so far. I do love Mortensen and there’s the addition of Michael Fassbender…
Gunnar Dinesen in Jauja (2014)
A Danish film set in 1880s Argentina with a plotline that confuses me, so, I leave it to you, dear reader.
Daru in Far from Men (2014)
A French film set during the Algerian War of Independence.
Tony Lip in Green Book (2018)
Classical/jazz pianist Don Shirley is driven by Italian American Frank “Tony Lip” Vallelonga while on tour through the South. It’s a decent film.
Murphy in Eureka (2023)
“The film is narrated by Eureka, a woman who became a migratory bird to create a connection between the years 1870 and 2019 and the United States, Mexico, and the Amazon rainforest,” per Wikipedia. Sounds arty!
Holger Olsen in The Dead Don’t Hurt (2023)
In an 1860s mining town, a man and woman fall in love, but he leaves to fight in the Civil War and things don’t go well.
What’s your favorite of Viggo Mortensen’s frock flick roles?
I haven’t really caught Viggo in frock flicks in general (forever an Aragorn fan though, of course) and I fear that Green Book might have actually turned me off seeing him in frock flicks in general. I did not enjoy the movie at all. Captain Alatriste looks interesting though.
Was all excited to watch him in Hidalgo, but turned it off after about an hour; couldn’t really get into it. Not a Frock Flick, but I loved him in Eastern Promises. :)
I loved Eastern Promises as well. He was amazing. But I really enjoyed Hidalgo.
I know the Lord of the Rings trilogy is not a “Flock Flick” and I’ve seen plenty of those pictures, but I thought he could never have looked better. Now I am willing to say that he is still extremely hot. My favorite: his Freud to Fassbender’s Jung. I always thought Jung was kind of hot anyway, so there’s that. I believe I will be watching “A Dangerous Method” soon.
Also, Apaloosa. He was amazing in that film and he looked so good in his costumes. Almost makes up for Renee Zellweger being in it. I wanted to slap her, but I always want to slap her. This is a safe zone for me to be snarky, after all.
He is hotter than hot in A Walk on the Moon. After watching it, I immediately bought the DVD. I recommend it. Not a period film but one of my favorites is Captain Fantastic. Although not particularly sexy in The Green Book, the acting was great and he totally became Tony Lip.
LOTR BUT his Capt. Alceiste is chef’s 💋
Alatriste Is available on You Tube. A bit slow, and all in Spanish, but worth it.
The first Viggo movie I saw was A Walk on the Moon. I was sixteen, and I was aghast by all the “action” that happened. It is definitely a great movie if you’re a Viggo fan, but it can be a bit of a bore outside of some of the stuff that is happening.
‘A Walk on the Moon’ was a good movie.
“A Walk on the Moon” was part of my awakening as a woman. He was and remains the hottest thing. I need to go rewatch that like ASAP.
Absolutely watch “A Walk on the Moon”! Also, Liev Schreiber is in it.
The Reflecting Skin (1990) is a fantastic movie and enjoys a good reputation among film buffs. It’s one of those hidden gems. Beautifully shot, acted, written, and scored. Definitely reminiscent of Flannery O’Connor logic.
That said, it’s a very dark movie. It’s like Days of Heaven (1978)’s very mean-spirited cousin.
