MCM: Michael Smiley – Frock Flicks

Michael Smiley is a Northern Irish actor and comedian, usually known for playing roles as “that weird guy in that one scene” in films and miniseries. But he’s been in enough historical flicks now that he qualifies for his own Man Candy Monday!

Bleak House (2005)

I’m 99.9% sure this is Michael Smiley, but I could be wrong. He has a small part in the miniseries.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006)

Apologies for the absolutely TERRIBLE quality of this image, but it was the only one I could find of Michael Smiley in this film.

Burke and Hare (2010)

Ripper Street (2012-16)

Another small, but pivotal, part in on episode of the series Ripper Street.

A Field in England (2013)

The Wikipedia entry for this film sounds bonkers, so I won’t even try to sum it up. I’ll just say it’s set during the English Civil War and it’s a horror flick. The costumes do look pretty good, though.

Tulip Fever (2017)

We reviewed the film when it came out. The costumes by Michael O’Connor are amazing, but the plot drags. Get a load of that fabulous ruff, though!

Death and Nightingales (2018)

Set in Ireland in 1885, Michale Smiley plays a small part as Dummy McGonnell, a mute man.

Dead Still (2020-)

I covered this murder mystery miniseries for Snark Week a while back. While it had potential, it just never really got its legs under itself.

That is him in Bleak House! His part in that is tiny, but somehow still incredibly poignant! He makes you wish he had more screentime!
