British actress Clare Higgins is one of those amazing character actors who seem to be in darn near everything. Her credits include films like The House of Mirth (2000), The Libertine (2004), and Casanova (2005), but when I went to write this article, it turns out that her roles are so small that they are barely even on screen. Which sucks, since she is, in all honesty, a great actress and one that always delights me every time I see her appear on screen. So, let’s look at the films and TV shows she’s been in!
Pride and Prejudice (1980)
The Citadel (1983)
Nineteen Nineteen (1985)
The Inspector Alleyn Mysteries (1993)
The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones (1999)
The Secret (2000)
Stage Beauty (2004)
The Curse of Steptoe (2008)
Downton Abbey (2012)
Father Brown (2013)
The Convent (2018)
Dangerous Liaisons (2022)

Not a Frock Flick, but the original Hellraiser. Totally messed up, but I loved it and she was fantastic. :)
Thank you! I kept looking at photos of her and going, but why does she look so familiar when I haven’t seen most of these?
I just re-watched that Inspector Alleyn mystery, and CH has a truly juicy role, with some of the gaudier dresses in the episode.
If you can’t get into Father Brown, might I suggest its spin-off Sister Boniface Mysteries? You don’t need to know much about the connection, other than Sister Boniface appeared in one episode of Father Brown before being given her own spin-off a few years later but I do tend to prefer her as a lead (especially since she’s actually employed by the police department so therefore it’s not the usual trope of ‘civilian keeps being allowed to meddle in murder cases.’)
Took the words right out of my mouth … so to speak.
I was actually planning to type them, but a figure of speech is a figure of speech even when it’s written out (Unless, of course, it’s
just a cliche …).
I have to speak up for the 1980 Pride and Prejudice. It’s so closely entwined with wonderful memories of watching with my college friends that it is my very favorite of all of them. I swooned over David Rintoul as Darcy, and Judy Parfitt (!) is Lady Catherine. The adaptation was so close you could have followed along with the book. That literalism might be why some dislike this version, but it won me over.
Agreed. The 1980 P&P is my favorite, and Elizabeth Garvie is my definitive Lizzy.
Elizabeth Garvie definitely has “fine eyes”!
So glad to see the love! This was the P&P of my childhood too, and I had a crush on both Darcy and Elizabeth. Though neither of them ever seemed to do much else.
