French actress Brigitte Bardot has acted in a surprising number of historical costume films! And I generally laugh when I come across her, because there’s generally a lot of bouffant-ed hair and winged eyeliner. So I thought it would be fun to round up her frock flicks resume!
Mimi in Act of Love (1953)
An adaptation of a novel, in which a Parisian falls in love with an American soldier near the end of World War II.

Mademoiselle de Rosille in Royal Affairs in Versailles (1954)
An episodic look at the French palace of Versailles across several centuries, without much plot connecting the vignettes featuring famous historical people. “Mademoiselle de Rosille” doesn’t appear to be a real person; it’s been a while, but she’s hanging with Louis XV so I’m guessing she’s a mistress and/or lady-in-waiting.

Pilar d’Aranda in Caroline and the Rebels (1955)
An adventure film set during the Napoleonic era, and part of the Caroline chérie series of French films.

Lucie in The Grand Maneuver (1955)
A “comedy drama romance” per IMDB set just before World War I. A military man sets out to seduce a divorcée/milliner.

Andraste – Helen’s slave in Helen of Troy (1956)
A big budget biopic of the literary beauty whose kidnapping starts the Trojan Wars in Homer’s Iliad.

Poppea in Nero’s Mistress (1956)
An Italian film in which Roman Emperor Nero and his entourage visit a coastal villa; Poppea was initially the titular mistress, although she would later go on to marry the emperor.

Babette in Babette Goes to War (1959)
Set during World War II, Bardot plays a Frenchwoman who supports the Free French and thwart a German invasion of England.

Agnès Bernauer in Famous Love Affairs (1961)
An anthology film depicting four famous historical love affairs. Agnes Bernauer (c. 1410-35) was the mistress and perhaps also the first wife of the Duke of Bavaria. She was condemned for witchcraft and drowned.

Maria Fitzgerald O’Malley aka Maria I in Viva Maria! (1965)
A French/Italian film in which two women become revolutionaries in Central America in 1907.

Giuseppina Ditterheim in Spirits of the Dead (1968)
A horror anthology film with sections directed by French and Italian directors. Bardot’s section is set in Italy in the early 19th century.

Irina Lazaar in Shalako (1968)
An English Western film set in 1880 New Mexico.

Linda Larue in Rum Runners (1971)
A French/Italian/Spanish adventure film about a “rum runner” in 1920s Prohibition United States.

Louise/Frenchie King in The Legend of Frenchie King (1971)
A Western comedy film set in Texas, 1888.

Arabelle in The Edifying and Joyous Story of Colinot (1973)
A comedy set in 15th century France. A man’s fiancée has been kidnapped, and hijinks ensue.

Which of these Brigitte Bardot frock flicks do you want to watch immediately?
Shalako. I loves me a damn fine filly and a bitch fight…
In the acid Balzo shot I think it’s either a young goat or a fawn…either way the poor thing doesn’t look very comfortable
That could be Joanna Lumley in the Shalako shots.
“Viva Maria!” is supposed to be a lot of fun.
That’s Gloria Swanson as Nero’s mother Agrippina in Nero’s Mistress. Also love the open-fingered salute (?) in Babette Goes to War.
She WAS a great actress, but an absolute rancid bigoted bitch now which is a shame her younger self would’ve despised her current self
That’s not her in the pictures of Act of Love (1953). It’s Dany Robin
Grand Maneuvers is a very good high class melodrama.
Viva Maria is silly, but very funny
Not going to lie, Brunette Bardot is even more delightful to look at than Blonde Bardot.
Pretty to look at, but a shame she was a racist. :/
