I’ve been morbidly curious about Ken Russell’s The Devils (1971) for ages, but it’s really hard to find playing/streaming anywhere and even the DVD is rare. The movie was widely censored on its release, plus the distributor Warner Brothers cut many scenes from the film against Russell’s wishes. So even what’s been available in the decades since this movie was filmed wasn’t the whole movie as intended. Until now! In early 2026, Warner Brothers announced a restoration of the director’s cut which was shown at the Cannes Film Festival and then given a one-week theatrical release in the U.S. during October 2026. And that’s what I saw and am able to review here.
