Neal McDonough is one of those actors that pop up from time to time where I invariably utter “Oh, I love this guy!” Mainly, I’ve really enjoyed his roles as the bad guy in non-historical shows like Justified season 3, and in the film Red II (2013). He manages to be charming, handsome, and unhinged, stealing scenes left, right, and center. But he’s also had a spate of historical flicks that are noteworthy, especially where he was kind of typecast as a WWII soldier after the massive success of his role as Buck Compton in Band of Brothers (2001). So, today, we’re going to celebrate some of those flicks with a look at Neal McDonough’s historical repertoire!
Babe Ruth (1991)
Band of Brothers (2001)
Timeline (2003)
Flags of Our Fathers (2006)
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
Company of Heroes (2013)
Mob City (2013)
Agent Carter (2015-16)
Public Morals (2015)
1922 (2017)
The Warrant (2020)

I guess this doesn’t count as a Frock Flick, but I loved Mr. McDonough as the Tin Man in the Sci-Fi Channel Series, Tin Man (a retelling of the Wizard of Oz), with Alan Cumming as the Scarecrow.
The main reason he steals scenes is those otherworldly eyes. You can’t look away! The reason you will see him in so many war films is his refusal to do sex scenes. A very commanding presence indeed.
He is a scene-stealer, and I also loved him on Justified.
Please do a write up of Mob City, it was such a great and underrated show, and Alexa Davalos really had some gorgeous outfits.
