The TV adaptation of the Philippa Fucking Gregory novel about Elizabeth Woodville, queen of England.
Ergenia in Hercules (2014)
A feature film starring Dwayne Johnson (“The Rock”) as the ancient Greek hero. Ferguson’s character is “the Princess of Thrace.”
Dinah in The Red Tent (2014)
The TV miniseries adaptation of a modern novel about Biblical characters. Dinah is the daughter of Jacob and Leah, sister of Joseph if that means anything to you.
Katya/Lauren in Despite the Falling Snow (2016)
“In Cold War Moscow, a female spy steals secrets from an idealistic politician – and falls in love with him” (IMDB).
Kathleen in Florence Foster Jenkins (2016)
The biopic about a real-life New York heiress who tried to be a professional singer, despite being terrible at it. Set in the 1940s.
Jenny Lind in The Greatest Showman (2017)
A fictionalized musical biopic about showman/entertainer P.T. Barnum (1810-91). It makes slightly more sense that Ferguson was cast as Jenny Lind now that I know she’s Swedish.
What’s your favorite of Rebecca Ferguson’s few frock flick roles?
It’s true that loose uncovered hair was a thing for 15th-16th century queens’ coronations, but holding a 20th-century British field-marshal’s baton with the George and the Dragon finial snapped off instead of a sceptre, was not! (And it has literally just been snapped off. In lighter, sharper versions of that still you can see a broken end of the missing figurine; they didn’t even bother to file the thing off neatly.)

I’ve seen The White Queen and Greatest Showman. The White Queen seemed like budget 15th century – cheap television budget as opposed to old school Beeb authenticity. I did like the plot/actors. Greatest Showman – oh lord. Jenny Lind was a brunette. Her portrait is in the National Portrait Gallery around the corner from Trafalgar Square – why resort to the light haired cliche for Scandi characters? And the costumes – ugh. According to the Hollywood Reporter, they had a limited budget for costumes and relied on “donated” designer gowns that they “reconstructed.” It was supposed to be fashion forward like a Vogue shoot, which explains a lot, but I still hated the film. Jenny Lind was an opera singer, not a pop star. Oh well… I did see the costumes at a FIDM exhibit and took photos – the workmanship on the embellishments – lovely. But I still hated the costumes and film…lol…
Of the flicks listed here, I’ve only seen The Greatest Showman all the way through. I wish I hadn’t. I couldn’t make it through The White Queen, Despite the Falling Snow and Florence Foster Jenkins. I had no idea that The Red Tent had such a stacked cast. Now I might just read the book and watch the movie. In the Hercules pictures, especially the second one, she looks so much like Rachel Weisz. I think all of her pictures costumes are gorgeous as is she. Overall, I think she’s a good actress, but obviously I favor her contemporary roles over her frock flick ones!

On a less serious note, whenever I see la Ferguson one always suspects a resemblance to the late Ingrid Bergman – which definitely adds a delightful frisson to Ms Ferguson’s appearances in MISSON: IMPOSSIBLE.
