The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017-) continues to be fabulous in season 2! I binged my way through the entire series in a few days and my toes just twinkled at everything: the characters, the snappy dialogue, the locations, and THE WARDROBE. Let’s count down everything that’s making me happy about season 2:
5. Paris
Okay, so it’s my favorite city on the planet, but when Midge’s mom Rose decides to run off from her crazy family and re-find herself, what better city in which to do it? And what a perfect place for Rose and Abe to reconnect!
4. Abe
Okay, so I LOVES me a crusty, cranky character who says what they’re thinking, so Abe has just been Working For Me this season. Watching him give Benjamin the third degree (he made him submit reading lists!!)! Furious at Midge over the comedy and all her other life choices! Jumping to crazy conspiracy theories after finding his son works for the CIA! ALL THE CRANKY, ALL THE TIME!
3. Rufus Sewell
He’s got a small part in one episode as a super avant garde painter, but the second I heard that voice, my ovaries started tingling.
2. Girdle Jokes
Okay, so this is from season 1, but Midge explaining how she’s basically physically impervious due to the armor of her girdle? DYING!
1. The Wardrobe, Duh
The costumes continue to be FAB-U-LOUS. Donna Zakowska continues as designer from season 1, and she’s done a number of interviews, like:
- This Costume Designer Wants You to Look as Marvelous as Mrs. Maisel
- Mrs. Maisel’s Costume Designer Explains Five Key Outfits From Season Two
- ‘Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Costumes and Sets Bring “Magical Color” to Season 2
- MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL‘S DESIGNER ON THE SHOW’S SECOND SEASON
There have been co-designers credited on a number of episodes, many of whom are otherwise listed in the Costume/Wardrobe Department, and I love the idea that different people are being given a moment to shine. They are: Claire Aquila, Katie Hartsoe, Annie Le, Ben Phillip, Isabelle Simone Rabaud, and Marina Reti.
How much do you love The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel?
My heart’s desire is to have a suit exactly like Rose’s last Paris suit. The dove gray, the red, the hood! be still my heart. I may actually make myself one after the Holiday crazy is over. I can’t get it out of my head.
Rose in Paris had the best clothes
I loved season 1 but been so busy with work and all that stuff, that I’m going to have to binge watch after Christmas this, and episodes 5 on for Outlander.
What I like about Mrs Maisel is her growing sense of feminism and independence while mixing home, career and family.
My favorite moment is when Benjamin asks how her shoes match her purse, and Midge just says, “witchcraft.” It’s fantastic.
I binge watched season 1 on a plane from NZ to London and it was so spectacular. But did anyone else find it incredibly sad that both women got up before their husbands and put on their faces? It’s those little clues about how godawful and hard it all was that balance the glamour.
I was more annoyed than sad. Rose fusses over her granddaughter’s forehead, saying beauty makes happiness easier. Yet Rose and Midge don’t get fulfillment over their looks, but other venues.
This wardrobe is timeless—one could wear it today, and still get the right kind of stares!
For me, the single most awesome thing in season 2 is Lilian, Midge’s impromptu interpreter. To simultaneously translate like that, and preserve the humor is nothing short of goddess like.
Susie is by far the BEST thing about TMMM, and way funnier than Midge.
