I’m putting the recaps of The New Look (2024) on hold until I’ve had a chance to catch up on all of the remaining episodes, since I’ve started to sound like a broken record with my last several posts about how good the show is, but how thin on interesting costume content. So, I decided to shift focus onto new shows waiting for reviews and the first one on the list is The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin (2024), starring my favorite The Mighty Boosh co-star, Noel Fielding. I’ve long been a fan of the Boosh as well as the other random projects Fielding has done over the years, from The IT Crowd to Great British Bake-Off, but if there was one type of show that I was waiting for him to do, it would be exactly Dick Turpin.
One of the best things about The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin is that, well, it’s right up front about the fact that this is not historical accuracy. I love it when shows do this, such as The Great (2020-23). There’s no illusions going into the show that things are going to be remotely factual, which frees all of us here at Frock Flicks to not angst over every little inaccuracy.
So, who is Dick Turpin? He was an actual highwayman active in England in the first quarter of the 18th century. This is about as close as the show gets to anything truly historical, but the fun lies in the outrageous scraps that Dick and his crew get into while trying to evade capture. The costumes were designed by Rosa Dias, who also worked on another fun historical show from a few years back, Year of the Rabbit (2019). The show is based in the 1730s, during the era Turpin was most active in, and so there’s a lot of fun to be had with 18th-century costumes, for both men and women.

I have not been watching but clearly I need to get started! It sounds like a fun romp with interesting costumes and the fabulous Noel Fielding (whom I adored in the Great British Baking Show).
We all need a little fun, sometimes! This isn’t to be taken seriously! ;)
I absolutely adored this!
Haven’t seen this, but I’m getting Severus Snape vibes from Noel Fielding in these photos. RAWR. :)
