  1. Sam Reid is the superior Essex, despite how deeply terrible Anonymous was. That being said, I liked the scope of this miniseries, since we either see young Elizabeth or Elizabeth already as queen, and I thought Anne Marie Duff did a good job so I’m willing to look past the lacklustre costuming.

  2. Having not seen very much of the show when it first aired and having been deeply unimpressed by the aesthetic on display – really, nothing dates a period film more badly than efforts to be ‘contemporary’ in fashion – I was delighted & amused to see Ms Joanne Whalley pop up as Her Late Majesty Queen Mary I of England, Ireland, France etc.

Partly for herself, partly knowing that she went on to play Queen Katherine in WOLF HALL (I look forward to seeing if Ms Romola Garai also manages that double at some point).

  3. I’ve always been struck by the fact that Lettice Knollys and Elizabeth bore more than a passing resemblance to each other, at least from what I can tell from the portraits. This production seems to get that down.

  4. I’m pretty sure the yellow dress Lettice wears is also from Tudors, I remember Anne of Cleves wearing it in her last scene as Queen.

  5. These costumes are not recycled FROM “The Tudors.” They were recycled BY “The Tudors.” This miniseries is from 2005, while the first season of the Showtime drama premiered in 2007. Doesn’t mean they’re not hideous, but I think it’s important to mention they were either made for this production or date back to an even earlier series or film.

  6. I admit to not seeing this particular version of an Elizabeth biopic/series. In all honesty, when the costuming is that wrong, it’s a complete turn off, IMO, so I can’t be bothered to waste my time when the filmmakers can’t be bothered to try to be accurate.

I’m so over film makers who believe they have to contemporize the look for a modern audience – it’s as if they don’t trust the public to immerse themselves in the story/period. Or do they believe they have to make things so bland that cheap cosplay could potentially be sold at Hot Topic?

Having said that, based on the stills, most of these costumes are sad. That embroidered ruff reminds me of the kind of Christmas tree skirt you’d find in a nouveau riche home.

    And that’s all, folks…

Feel the love
