  1. It’s based on an Edna Ferber novel, and the movie ignores the fact that Clio is an octoroon. Her mother was a place who accidentally killed her protector, Clio’s father, and was exiled to France to avoid a hideous scandal. So when Clio returns to New Orleans seeking revenge, it’s a huge shock to her relatives on the white side of the color line and they pay through the nose to make her go away.

Flawed though it is, and frankly the book, although steamier, isn’t hugely better, I love the movie for the costumes. I place bets with myself on whether Ingrid could sit down in the various outfits. So tight!

  2. I don’t know why Ingrid Bergman would have chosen this role, other than contractual obligation. Joan of Arc is the only historical role I associate with her in her prime. At any rate, the stills read 1940s undies, with lifted and separated bras underneath instead of a proper corset, and that spoils everything for me. Certainly, the stripes and plaids are used in an interesting way, but since the hair and makeup all conform to leading lady syndrome, the film doesn’t inspire me to watch. Funny how easy it is to take a side based on stills.

  3. This sounds suspiciously like a film that fell victim to a Hollywood that fell victim to Hays Code morality – the plot summary cries out for antiheroes, but mid 1940s Hollywood wasn’t really the place and time for that sort of thing.

I wonder if the basic plot would have more luck in a later era of filmmaking? (The 1970s come to mind) or in a different country (I wonder what a post-war European production might have done with this set-up?).
