The first three episodes of the Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice-inspired sequel adaptation, The Other Bennet Sister (2026) just dropped on BritBox. Made by the BBC, this novel adaptation TV miniseries tells the “story” of the much maligned younger sister, Mary, from Jane Austen’s novel. In Austen’s novel, Mary is unattractive, bookish, and annoying. In this telling (book written by Janice Hadlow), Mary is essentially overlooked and through a series of events, consciously decides to try to become The Most Intelligent/Well-Read Sister as a means to find her own identity amongst all her Sparkling Star Sisters … and then things get more complicated!
The series stars Ella Bruccoleri (Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, Miss Barragan in Bridgerton season 3, Hotel Portofino, Sister Frances on Call the Midwife seasons 8-12, All Creatures Great & Small, The Last Kingdom, and Genius – the Picasso season) as Mary. And as ALL the episodes have already aired in the UK, thanks to a little thing called VPN, I’ve watched it all (but will only review the first three episodes today — look for a wrap-up post when the series has ended airing in the US). This post got LONG, so today I’m going to talk about Mary and all her sisters’ costumes. Next week, I’ll talk about Mrs. Bennet, Caroline Bingley, Mrs. Gardiner, and a few of the smaller characters.

Goong by this show, Ms Ella Bruccoleri will be spending the rest of her career enduring an army of fans approaching her with an abiding impression that she needs a hug.
Also, I love this series all the more for allowing me to make joke about James Moriarty (YOUNG SHERLOCK 2026) keeping an English grandfather buried in the closet.
Probably not literally, even if this is a Moriarty.
