  1. EXCELLENT post! Two other possible reasons for the decline of the hat:

    1) men’s hats were linked (inaccurately but surprisingly widely in “men’s” magazines) with contributing to hair loss by the early 1950s;

    2) the increasing prevalence of heavily-styled “bouffant” hair starting in the late ’50s and into the ’60s– leading to tinier and lighter hats that could perch on top without damaging the ‘do.

  2. My great-grandmother was in vaudeville in the 1920s and 1930s and she had her own product line of turban-ish hair/head wraps in the 1930s. My sister found an ad for them in the Oregonian’s morgue files online.
