This week, I thought we should focus on Mark Strong, an actor known primarily for his villainous roles, but who breaks out the occasional comedy or mystery role. He’s one of my favorite actors, and there are a number of great frock flicks to his name. So, let’s dive in!
Sharpe (1993-2008)
Emma (1996)
Anna Karenina (2000)
To End All Wars (2001)
Henry VIII (2003)
The Long Firm (2004)
Oliver Twist (2005)
Tristan + Isolde (2006)
Stardust (2007)
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (2008)
The Young Victoria (2009)
Sherlock Holmes (2009)
Robin Hood (2010)
The Way Back (2010)
The Eagle (2011)
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)
Day of the Falcon (2011)
Closer to the Moon (2014)
The Imitation Game (2014)
The Siege of Jadotville (2016)
The Catcher Was a Spy (2018)
Stockholm (2018)
1917 (2019)
Cruella (2021)
What’s your favorite of Mark Strong’s frock flick roles?
He gives me Christopher Meloni vibes in some of those images.
Just a heads up that the crest on his chest in the Robin Hood image has been altered, presumably someone fancasting him as Stannis Baratheon in ASOIAF.
Damn he looks good in Arab dress!
OH MY YES
Miss Pettigrew is one of my favorite comfort watches, for both the cast (Mark Strong, Lee Pace, Ciaran Hinds, Amy Adams, hello) and the costumes. But I also just discovered his miniseries Our Friends in the North which I’m struggling through because while the plot is good, the various wigs the costume department slapped on all the male leads to indicate the progression of time are truly terrible.
Loved him in Emma. He is my favorite Knightley
Mine too!
Robin Hood.
The Long Firm is excellent
He was John Conroy in Young Victoria! I hadn’t realized.
OMIGOSH, YES! With or without hair. Add a burnoose and one of THOSE beards…Mamma Mia! There is an Italian connection. Real name Marco?
Good looking men are especially delicious in a burnoose and neatly trimmed beard. Makes you understand why The Sheikh was a hit back in the day and women fantasized about being carried off by a desert raider. Of course fantasy doesn’t mean you want it to really happen!
Oh, God, I didn’t realize just how many movies of his I’d seen until I scanned this list. Mark Strong is just…dreamy!!!! And, he’s a good actor, too! ;) It’s so hard to pick a fave role: I LOVED him as Nick in Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, and I wished he had more screen time. He was just so delicious in that Scarpia-esque role. He is giving me SERIOUS Andy Garcia vibes from Godfather III in the pic from The Long Firm. Agree or disagree: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_Corleone#/media/File:Vincent_Corleone.jpg
Stardust for me— partially because I haven’t partaken as much of his frock flicks, and partially because Stardust is just a movie that I really, really love.
The Best Mr Knightley in the Best Emma! (although Jeremy Northam was rather good too). And Mark Strong is wonderful in the Long Firm – worth a look on Youtube.
Don’t judge me, but I found excruciatingly hot as Sir John Conroy in Young Victoria. Like, how I totally get how the Duchess let him run rampant over her life.
The real Conroy apparently had a lot of sex appeal and used it unscrupulously.
But did he really look and sound like Mark Strong!??! I mean, when he growls it melts my soul!
(the Victoria PBS series’ version of Ser John was not nearly as volcanically sexy)
As already stated, with or without hair………….gorgeous!
Plus, he was Merlin in Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle!
Stop me if you’re heard this one before – Mr Mark Strong as Gaius Julius Caesar? (He’s definitely got the face and charisma for a “Stupid Sexy Caesar” sort of villain…).
