I just finished binge-watching the first three episodes of Marble Hall Murders (2026) starring Lesley Manville and Tim McMullan, and I went in not really knowing what to expect, or that this miniseries was the third installment of a larger series about Susan Ryeland (Manville) and her imaginary literary companion/detective consultant Atticus Pünd (McMullan), based on a series of novels written by Anthony Horowitz. Now that I know this, I am all fired up to go back and watch the earlier series and if the costume content is worth it, which based on this installment it should be, write up some more reviews!
The brief overview of the plot is that Susan Ryeland is a publishing editor who, in the earlier series Magpie Murders (2022), and Moonflower Murders (2024), is introduced to the work of author Alan Conway and his famous detective character Atticus Pünd. Ryeland’s vivid imagination takes her into the Pünd’s world, set in the 1950s, as she works to solve a parallel mystery happening in her own modern life. Occasionally, Pünd bleeds into her real world and appears as someone she talks to and discusses her ideas on how to solve the mystery, but typically we see Pünd inhabiting his own literary universe in full 1950s glory.
The premise of Marble Hall Murders centers on Susan being drafted to edit the final installment of the Atticus Pünd novels — this time assigned to a young author, Eliot Crace. Crace is the grandson of famed children’s author Miriam Crace, who was also apparently an abusive monster to her children and grandchildren. Eliot carries some serious baggage with him which Susan picks up on instantly as she reads through each installment of his book, sussing out the parallels between the characters Pünd interacts with and Eliot’s own family.
Eliot informs her that the solution to his grandmother’s death, which he insists was murder (much to the intense chagrin of the rest of his family who are intent on keeping Miriam Crace’s legacy as pristine as possible), is in Pünd’s mystery. The scenes flash between Susan getting drawn into trying to figure out the mystery surrounding Miriam Crace’s death, and Atticus Pünd’s mystery which surrounds the poisoning of one Lady Chalfont, and her sprawling blended family of suspects keen to get their hands on her money. The actors portraying the Craces also appear in the 1950s “novel” segments as the Chalfonts.
I can’t wait for the next three episodes to drop!

I’m guessing Lola is at first judged as cheap/ a floozy by the family? She’s very Marilyn. I love the homage to Agatha Christie type novels!
Someone finally addresses her as Lady Chalfont in the 4th episode! I don’t know why, but it was starting to really bother me that her husband is the 7th Earl and everyone just calls her Lola, lol.
I thought this series would really work for me. It has all the elements. But it was too bitty. First here, then there, flashbacks, reminiscences, and it lost the story – or multiple stories – so that in the end I didn’t care about any of them. But it’s been popular enough to commission 3 series, so perhaps it’s just me.
It does jump around quite a bit and that can take you out of the story, but I feel like it finds its flow after the first couple of episodes. I’m currently going back through the previous seasons now to see how they are.
