I’ve been a fan of Brendan Fraser since Encino Man (1992) and truly, there really isn’t any role I’ve seen him perform that I haven’t enjoyed. From silly comedies to tragic stories, heroes to villains, and everything in between, it’s hard to tear your eyes away when he’s on screen! Today, let’s celebrate his historical film and TV roles!

Brendan Fraser in Encino Man (1992) — Would anyone care to weeze the juice with me?

Dogfight (1991)

Brendan Fraser in "Dogfight" (1991) — This film starred River Phoenix as a Marine who is about to ship out to Vietnam in 1963. Brendan Fraser appears as “Sailor No. 1” who instigates a bar fight with the Marines.

School Ties (1991)

Brendan Fraser in School Ties (1992) — Released the same year as Encino Man (1992), Brendan Fraser was cast as the lead in School Ties, part of an ensemble cast made up of some future heavy-hitters. Fraser’s character is a teenager from a working-class background who wins a scholarship to a prestigious New England prep school in the 1950s. Already living with one strike against him for being working class, he struggles to conceal the fact that he’s also Jewish from his shitty WASP classmates.

Fallen Angels: The Professional Man (1993)

Brendan Fraser in Season 2, Epsiode 2 of "Fallen Angels" (1993-) — I had never heard of Fallen Angels before I wrote this post, but now I want to go back and watch it. It was an anthology series that aired on Showtime. Each episode is set in Los Angeles between the end of WWII and the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Brendan Fraser plays Johnny, an elevator operator by day and hitman by night. His love affair with a bartender angers Johnny’s gangster employer who orders him to kill his boyfriend. For the era it came out in, this was pretty cutting edge stuff, and wouldn’t be the last queer role that Fraser took.

Gods and Monsters (1998)

Brendan Fraser in Gods and Monsters (1998) — It’s 1957 and director of smash-hit horror film Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, James Whale (Ian McKellen) is in seriously declining health in a Hollywood retirement home. He is drawn to Clayton Boone, a handsome ex-Marine who now works as the gardener at the retirement home, and the two form a bond. The film was praised for both McKellen’s and Fraser’s performances.

Blast From the Past (1999)

Brendan Fraser in Blast from the Past (1999) — I quibbled a bit about including this film, because it’s technically set in the “modern day” (i.e., late 1990s), but the premise is about a man who was raised from birth in a fallout shelter by his nuclear-war-paranoid parents and emerges after his father dies 35 years later basically still living in a preserved time capsule of 1962. It’s a super cute romantic comedy, co-starring Alicia Silverstone, and definitely a fun watch if you want some fun fluff.

The Mummy (1999)

Brendan Fraser in The Mummy (1999) — DO YOU KNOW HOW PSYCHED I AM THAT THE ORIGINAL CAST IS REUNITING FOR THE UPCOMING SEQUEL? DO YOU??? Oh, right, the synopsis … Go read the post we did a while back about it, and if you haven’t seen the film, WATCH IT. You can ignore the sequels, but the first film is cinematic perfection.

The Quiet American (2002)

Brendan Fraser in The Quiet American (2002) — Set in Vietnam in the 1950s, the film is a remake of the 1958 film of the same name, which is an adaptation of the 1955 book also of the same name. The film is about the love triangle/rivalry between an older British man (played by Michael Cain), a young American man (played by Fraser), and a young Vietnamese woman (played by Do Thi Hai Yen) who is caught in the middle. It’s also an exploration of jealousy, revenge, and guilt.

Texas Rising (2015)

Brendan Fraser in Texas Rising (2015-) — A History Channel miniseries (which should already set your expectations to their lowest setting) about the creation of the Texas Rangers. Brendan Fraser plays Billy Anderson, and … that’s it. That’s all the info that I can find about his role in the show. Feel free to chime in if you have more details!

Trust (2018)

Brendan Fraser in Trust (2018) — It’s Cal Worthington and his dog spot! Haha, just kidding. It’s Brendan Fraser as James Fletcher Chace, the chief of security for the family patriarch J. Paul Getty (played by Donald Sutherland) in this miniseries about the kidnapping of Getty heir, John Paul Getty III. It’s set in 1973, so technically falls outside of our cutoff year of 1969, but I really needed to include that Cal Worthington joke.

The Secret of Karma (2020)

Brendan Fraser in The Secret of Karma (2020) — A film about a man who dies and comes back to life able to remember his (alleged) past lives. There’s some truly terrible costuming, so don’t get excited. That said, Fraser looks dapper AF in a 1920s suit.

No Sudden Move (2021)

Brendan Fraser in No Sudden Move (2021) — Brendan Fraser plays Doug Jones, a supporting character that plays a pivotal role in the plot in Steven Soderbergh’s 1950s crime thriller. Some reviewers have drawn comparisons between Fraser’s performance and Orson Welles’ in The Third Man (1949), but I’ve seen neither film so I can’t exactly comment.

Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)

Brendan Fraser in Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) — This is a film I want to watch, but I don’t think there’s enough Adderall in my life to be able to sit through it. Brendan Fraser plays W.S. Hamilton, defense attorney for William “King” Hale (played by Robert De Niro), in Martin Scorsese’s epic eight million year long three-and-a-half-hour long film about the true story of a powerful Texas rancher who attempts to deceive the Osage people out of their oil rights on their land. When that doesn’t work, he resorts to murder.

Pressure (2026)

Brendan Fraser in Pressure (2026) — Set in 1944, Pressure deals with the complexities of warfare and weather. Brendan Fraser plays Dwight D. Eisenhower, who must make the difficult call of launching the largest and most dangerous sea invasion in history during what is predicted to be the absolutely worst conditions imaginable. The mission could fail entirely due to the weather, but the stakes are too high not to forge ahead.

I really liked The Quiet American! Any chance of getting a MCM for Michael Caine? He’s been in a boatload of Frock Flicks. :)

The dad in Blast From the Past was still very much alive by the end of the movie. He had a heart attack, but survived.
