You asked for it, so here’s an occasional open thread to bitch about anything tangentially related to history, costume, movies, or TV shows! Or whatever else is on your mind right now. Note that URLs are automatically held for moderation, but most anything else goes as long as you’re not bitchier than we are!
Halloween is just barely over, and maybe we hid a little chocolate from the trick-or-treaters for ourselves. Because we’re gearing up for Election Day in America, and we need that sugar high. We’ve always said that Frock Flicks is a feminist publication and we’re against fascists even if they’re hiding in orange makeup, so obviously we’re supporting Kamala Harris (she’s also our San Francisco Bay Area gal!). We strongly encourage our fellow Americans to vote to help preserve our democracy — make a plan and get help voting, if you haven’t voted early like we did. Then we can hopefully relax and go back to watching fluffy costume dramas!
Have you voted already?
I voted October 16, the first day for early voting in RI. Don’t want to be waiting in those long lines. :)
Huzzah!
Became a US citizen this year and duly went to vote! Alas, too late to be an election worker, but there’s always next time.
Awesome!
I also voted! I enjoyed Iron Jawed Angels more than Suffragette. Iron Jawed Angels had more fun vibes. What are your thoughts on Gilded Newport Mysteries: Murder At the Breakers? I’m partial to the mid-late 1890s, so I have opinions on the costumes! None of them are good! Why must we have beachy wave quasi-updos in period dramas, almost worse than flowing beachy waves!
Yay voting & Iron Jawed Angels! And heh, another Hallmark Channel exercise! We haven’t watched but there’s always Snark Week :D
I’ve voted, and my evil immigrant husband has, too!
Woot! Immigrants, getting the job done!
Okay totally not your usual fare, but have you seen the 3 Body Problem series on Netflix? It’s sci fi, but there’s a few scenes that take place in a virtual game set in 16th century England and the costumes to my amateur eye looked SPOT ON!! No headband French hoods, actual turnback sleeves and fantastic bodice and farthingale silhouette. Would love to hear your thoughts on those costumes if it piques your interest :)
I’ve heard about those scenes, but so far we haven’t watched the whole series.
Voted here in in CA by our usual mail-in ballot! I can’t wait for PBS to show the new seasons of Call the Midwife, Miss Scarlet (minus the duke, sadly), and Sister Boniface — all with historical costumes. Not historical, but on Shetland (new season also coming to PBS) they do sometimes where authentic Shetland knitted sweaters.
*wear authentic
I voted by mail too! The new PBS slate looks great :)
Has anyone here seen Agatha All Along on Disney? It’s modern-set, but the final episode flashes back to Agatha Harkness’s life through multiple centuries, starting in the 1750s and going through the modern day. To my eye I wouldn’t say the eighteenth century costumes looked perfect, but there were women in caps and hats for once, and it’s a period that comes up infrequently enough in tv that I thought it was kind of neat to see amidst the spooky, campy witch drama!
Oh maybe Sarah is watching that – she watched WandaVision.
