You asked for it, so here’s an occasional open thread to bitch about anything tangentially related to history, costume, movies, or TV shows! Or whatever else is on your mind right now. Note that URLs are automatically held for moderation, but most anything else goes as long as you’re not bitchier than we are!
Heading into cozy season and looking for suitable frock flicks to curl up with. There’s a few new and returning shows, plus classics as always.
What are you watching as winter calls?

The Gilded Age is back! I feel like they tried to cram too much into the first episode, but I generally feel that way about most first episodes of Fellowes’ shows. It went by so fast that I didn’t get a chance to really study the costumes, I hope the next episode is a bit slower.
I’m still not a big Marian fan, but everybody else is great! I kind of wish Peggy had her own spin-off show though, because I want to see more, but it’s hard with a big ensemble cast.
Agreed on all counts. Dunno if I’ll keep reviewing it here tho – only if there’s some particularly interesting costumes.
I was hoping you would, but the first episode is clearly not enough for any post. Maybe a season 4 costume review? Or if the costumes get interesting (really good, or really, really bad) maybe a mid-season and post-season post?
Marian is as boring as watching grass grow!
Does Karolina Zebrowska’s YouTube skits count as frock flicks? The writing and costumes tend to be way better than much of the higher budget, bigger name productions.
Her last video about a 1920’s girl who is obsessed with Halloween was so funny!
Nope!
How much of Jimmy is going to be Christian propaganda? Time will tell. It doesn’t seem to be showing in any Cinemas near me!
Yeah, I’m not planning to watch (due to propaganda factor) unless someone gives me the all-clear!
Withering Heights came to a channel where I didn’t have to pay extra to see it so I bit the bullet and watched. OMG it is awful and not just from the point that it only has a passing association with the book. It was shallow and boring, not even the cinematography could redeem it. I hoped I would like something but…no.
Emerald made a rage bait fanfic film. I still have no desire to watch it! Even Barbie would reject half the terrible costumes!
I’ve been trying to convince K & S to watch it w/me & we live-stream it on our Patreon so everyone can see me screaming.
The 1991 film “Raise the Red Lantern,” set in 1920s China, is coming back to theaters. I think it’s already showing in NYC and maybe LA.
I don’t know how accurate the costumes are. I’m thinking of criticism Zhang Yimou got for implying certain customs made up for the story were historical fact.
It was beautiful and SAD, although so out of my area of expertise!
You could check out “Shanghai Triad” by the same director and same star (Gong Li). It’s set in the ‘30s, about organized crime around a Westernized nightclub.
I loved that movie when I was 9, and it was on IFC or something (back when they actually showed international films). As an adult, I understood more of the references and knew more of China’s history.
I’m looking forward to the upcoming The Face of Horror movie. According to the director, the costuming is historically accurate.
