WCW: Amanda Hale

Who loves Amanda Hale as much as I do? She doesn’t have a huge repertoire on IMDB, but what she lacks in numbers she makes up for in almost all of her films being historical. She also plays a wide variety of characters, from scheming to sweet, so she’s definitely not a one-note actress! So, today, let’s take a look at her historical film and television roles!

Persuasion (2007)

Kendra deemed this one a “pretty darn decent adaptation of the Austen novel” in her short review. I haven’t gotten around to watching it yet but the costumes look interesting so I imagine it will get shuffled up to the top of the watch list in short order!

Bright Star (2009)

I had to scroll through 653 images of this movie on IMDB just hoping that maybe someone had caught a photo of Amanda Hale as one of the Reynolds sisters. Luckily for me, after 654 images, I found her! Great costuming in this film.

The Crimson Petal and the White (2011)

Another short review from Kendra, who proclaimed, “Really great Dickensian settings, great but appropriately dark bustle-era costuming, and some faaabulous makeup design.”

Being Human (2008-13)

I loved the original BBC series and stopped watching it after the original cast cycled out, so I had no idea that they had a ghost character played by an Amanda Hale until today. Kind of inclined to go back and watch it now, even if her costumes are a little wacky.

Ripper Street (2012-16)

If you missed it, I wrote a whole post about this show last week! Go check it out!

The White Queen (2013)

Ah, yes, the slog that was covering this show for you, dear readers … It nearly broke me by the end. Not because I wasn’t entertained, but because the costume content got smaller and smaller as the episodes progressed, and by the end of it, I was really struggling to come up with anything to say about the same six costumes. That said, this was one of Margaret Beaufort’s more attractive looks in the show, and Amanda Hale was one of the biggest reasons I kept tuning in.

The Invisible Woman (2013)

I haven’t seen this one but the costumes look decent … on everyone else except Amanda Hale. Some costume fitters seem to really struggle with a tall, slender female shape and can’t make it work, which sucks, because everyone else’s outfits look pretty well-fitted.

A Discovery of Witches (2018-22)

I actually didn’t realize this was Amanda Hale until I really stopped and studied the photo! Without her signature chestnut hair, she looked so different! I still haven’t seen this series, but Kendra felt the costumes were good, even if she struggled with the source material.

What’s your favorite Amanda Hale role? Tell us about it in the comments!
