Matt Smith is one of those actors that, for the most part, I struggle to find the appeal with when it comes to his looks. But what he brings in terms of acting, I absolutely love, every time! He’s been in shockingly few historical flicks considering his age and his versatility — you’d think he’d be in every show and film that pre-dates 1969, but as this short list shows, that is not the case! Hopefully, we will get more historical roles in the future!
The Ruby in the Smoke (2006)

The Shadow in the North (2007)

Bert & Dickie (2012)

Pride + Prejudice + Zombies (2016)

The Crown (2016-17)

Mapplethorpe (2018)

Last Night in Soho (2021)

Wait, that’s all the historical flicks he’s been in? Shocking! Anyway, leave your favorite Matt Smith role in the comments!

He also played Christopher Isherwood in the BBC drama of Christopher and His Kind.
Thanks for the info.
Matt is my Doctor (IYKYK) but his Prince Phillip and Jack in Last Night in Soho are probably my favorites of his frock flicks roles (went to Last Night in Soho for the costumes, stayed for Matt Smith’s charming menace).
Matt Smith is forever wrestling with Mr David Tennant and Mr Peter Capaldi when it comes to being ‘My’ DOCTOR WHO, but mr Smith keeps edging out a win because COME ALONG PONDS (Amy, Rory and Eleven all the way!).
Matt’s turn as Mr. Collins in Pride & Prejudice & Zombies was hilarious and—for me—it made the whole film worthwhile. So many other problems in that film, but it was fun to watch for some reason. Didn’t like the casting for the men, except for Matt Smith and Charles Dance.
What a nice way to start the week <3 Thanks!
You forgot Christopher and His Kind
He is absolutely terrifying in Charlie Says. It took me three weeks to get through watching it the first time (I was constantly pausing it and then going back to where I left off) because his portrayal was so well done that it was almost traumatic.
One day Mr Smith and Mr Benedict Cumberbatch shall make a feature together, that their Weird Face Energy May deliver the jolt of a lifetime to the audience.
I will now be taking bets on whether that film will be Sci-Fi, Fantasy or Horror, because surely such a clash of peculiar bone structure cannot be contained in a mere drama!
You must be joking, right?
I didn’t say they were pretty, I said they were each fascinatingly-weird and therefore deserved a chance to play absolute weirdos together.
Perhaps in the next DOCTOR STRANGE movie?
