The second season of the CW’s Reign started last night, and I’m probably the only person who will admit to watching it. Why? Because I don’t give a crap that the costumes aren’t historically accurate, and the story bears little or no resemblance to Mary Queen of Scots’ actual life. It’s a campy soap opera with everything but hair pulling!
The big difference between Reign and most of what we snark is that this show doesn’t make any claims to historical accuracy. Go read the Wikipedia entry — the producers, actors, and designers all talk about making a sexy, fantasy, entertainment show with a history setting. They’re doing that. At least nobody is claiming to do something historically accurate when it’s clearly not. EHEM.
And it does have some good eye-candy, particularly the sets. I like all the candles and gothic archways. The soundtrack is cheesy modern crap, but that fits with the crazy dresses. Not prom dresses, thankyouverymuch, the costume designer has used wedding gowns and couture dresses, even putting Mary in Alexander McQueen and Dolce & Gabbana, according to interviews on E Online and other places. Classy, if weird.
Will you watch? Should we podcast it?
OH. MY. BABY. JESUS.

SHE WAS A RED HEAD FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!

Now she’s a goth, it’s my fantasy, OK!
WHY DID THEY BOTHER TO CALL IT MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS THEN? WHY NOT CALL IT “HILDEGARDE QUEEN OF SEXYTIMES”??
hyperventilating
:)
Bec. nobody knows who “Hildegarde” is, DUH!!! Don’t you know anything about marketing? MQoS has a built-in brand *eye rolls*
I think “Hildegarde” has great untapped potential!
Clearly, the CW didn’t want to start from scratch. Maybe AMC will go with “Hildy” next season (now that they’ve got a schedule hole since “Breaking Bad” is over).
