Queer Historical People Who Need Movies Made About Them
Frock flicks don’t need to be so heteronormative — history isn’t, if you really look into it. Here are just a few LGBTQ folks whose lives would make fascinating costume dramas.
Great callback! And I’m also happy that The Favourite as referenced in the comments turned out to be such a good movie.
For this topic, I’ll nominate Queen Christina of Sweden as someone whose story deserves a new treatment, with the caveat that we don’t have any accurate information about her sexuality, just as with most historical figures! She certainly defied societal expectations in many different ways, rejecting the roles that were placed on her as a child monarch, as a woman, and in the era of the Wars of Religion, she rejected Lutheranism for the Catholic church. Any and all of these are fascinating stories, in addition to the speculated but unconfirmed stories of her sexuality.
Queen Christina’s life hasn’t been given a particularly thoughtful film/TV treatment. Would be interesting to see a new take!
Michelangelo, who wrote sonnet series to at least two younger men.
Agreed, Michelangelo has infrequently shown up onscreen & been straight-washed when he is there.
