I haven’t had a chance to watch Sinners (2025) yet, but it’s on my short list for an in-depth review. That said, I was doing some preliminary reading up on the film and am getting kind of hyped about it, so I figured a brief highlight wouldn’t be amiss for this lovely summer Friday.
Sinners is the latest film from Ryan Coogler, who is probably best known to the average filmgoer for the Black Panther films produced by Marvel Studios. In this latest installment to his list of highly acclaimed films, Coogler tells the story of twin brothers (played by Michael B. Jordan) who return to their small rural Southern hometown in the 1930s to find it is a thriving hub for unsavory supernatural activity. Namely vampires. The brothers open a jazz club in an abandoned mill and hire a friend and guitar prodigy, Sammie (played by Miles Caton) to perform at their club. But there’s more than just raw talent in Sammie’s playing and soon all hell breaks loose as the vampires are drawn to the club by the power of music.
Initial thoughts: It is freaking gorgeous. The actors? Beautiful. The music? Bombastic. The costumes? FABULOUS.
Designed by Ruth E. Carter, the costumes are just beautiful, even though the characters aren’t wealthy.

And about the music? Well, I’ll leave you with this clip of a fantastic rendition of the Irish traditional song “All the Way to Dublin” by Jack O’Connell who plays Remmick, the lead vampire.
Are you hyped as I am about Sinners (2025)? Tell us about in the comments!
The song is “The Rocky Road to Dublin”, which is a staple of ‘traditional’ Irish music. Jack O’Connell said in an interview that he can belt out the song (and had done) at the drop of a hat.
It is, indeed, a wonderful and important movie. Satisfying on so many counts.
We needed this movie!
The cosmos look great but that rendition of “The Rocky Road to Dublin” really caught me. I love the song to begin with so I will definitely be checking this out.
ooooooooooooohhhhh yes ma’am! I’ll be watching that asap!
ooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yessum!
It is an absolutely fantastic film
Michael B Jordan X2? Take my money please. Also one of the most beautiful human beings on the planet.
This movie was earthshatteringly great.
It can’t be seen super well in the promo shot of Michael B. Jordan (x2) but there’s a neat differentiation in the brother’s costuming; Smoke as the older, more level-headed and serious twin, wears shades of blue including a blue flat cap and a blue shirt with white collar and cuffs (also aligning with Annie’s blue dress), whereas Stack as the younger and wilder twin wears shades of red, including a red fedora, tie, and pocket square.
Yes! There’s just so much going on re costuming, music, character interactions, storytelling. I need to watch it again!
Yes! Also the clothing styles hint to their links with different criminal groups in the North ( I won’t say more, because spoilers ^^)
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in I don’t know how long. So glad to see a Frock Flicks brief look and can’t wait for the in-depth review.
Everything about this movie is so insanely amazing! As soon as I finished watching it, I wanted to watch again!
I have the struggle of I really want to see it because the costuming looks amazing and the music is crazy good, BUT it also suspect if I were to watch it I would have nightmares for a long time and not sleep.
So do I sacrifice my sleep and my husband’s sleep as I keep making him go find out if things are breaking in so I can watch it? Or do I be good and not do that?
It’s worth it. I’m a scaredy cat and I had to watch it with my eyes closed for the scary parts for the first two times, and watch it during the day (10am showing!) but it was totally worth it. I have now seen it four times and want to go see it again!
I’m a close-my-eyes-and-tell-me-when-it-is-over person, and there are only a few gory moments. A (very)slow burn, fabulous soundtrack, and excellent soundtrack make it worthwhile.
Great movie, from the casting (perfect) to the music (songs chosen), to the costumes (the accuracy by Ruth C.) – this movie left no crumbs!
Awesome movie with a few flaws but the overall concept and execution outshines so many movies released recently. I want to see more movies like Sinners and by this design team. I’ve seen some commentators discuss interviews with production designers and many fabulous details and thoughtful design choices are included but not always lingered by the camera. Therefore a deep dive into production design should be incredible. I haven’t seen comments or discussion of the relationship between the vampire design and Ben Templesmith’s (30 Days of Night) although there is discussion of the vampires following Stoker’s concepts. Since the majority of the FX are practical, the gore can be a lot. What I thought was CGI is actually a choice of Camera Aspect ratio, amusingly footnoted by Screen Junkies Honest Trailers. But see Sinners… if you can in the theater because of the scope, beauty and attention to detail.
I’m assuming you didnt let Trystan write this article as she’d would have assumed Sam L Jackson was in it as they think all black people look the same. Why should anyone give a shit about your ‘critique’ (ie blowing a gasket if a costume is historically accurate) if you cant even tell people of a different skin colour apart? Go and wank away to your fantasies of living in a racist colonial empire, cos thats the real appeal of ‘frock flicks’ to you losers.
