A classic novel adaption by the BBC, The Way We Live Now (2001) is chock full of a fine actors in excellent costumes, spouting precise and often witty dialog.
Yet I think this Victorian story holds up today because it’s about class and money without being didactic and grim like Dickens. It’s about the different status of women and men in society without being moralistic and tragic like Hardy. There’s no great romance involved but love, passion, and marriage are discussed endlessly. Writer Anthony Trollope wanted to satirize the “powerful and good,” and that sure is relevant right now.
