You asked for it, so here’s an occasional open thread to bitch about anything tangentially related to history, costume, movies, or TV shows! Or whatever else is on your mind right now. Note that URLs are automatically held for moderation, but most anything else goes as long as you’re not bitchier than we are!
We made it another month through this hostile government takeover, go us! We here at Frock Flicks HQ hope fellow American friends are also contacting their Congresspeople (use 5Calls, it’s easy) and protesting when and if you’re able. Meanwhile, let’s scan the dial for some costume drama self-care…
How are you escaping reality these days?
Karolina Zebrowska did a video on why the costumes in Period Dramas are so shitty now! Discuss! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRvQ_JkqvO4&t=10s
Thanks for sharing. It was an interesting and informative presentation. More fun that your post introduced me to more historical fashion and history.
Karolina is da bomb!
Submitted a correction to the New York Times a week ago for calling an Edwardian-inspired dress Victorian. Maybe the pettiest/nerdiest thing I’ve ever done, but it felt good! So irritating to see a distinctly Edwardian inspired dress called Victorian (which, considering the range of silhouettes and styles encapsulated by the Victorian period, feels a little lazy in itself for a fashion column).
NICE!!!!
So, who do we think has the worst IPhone face in frock flicks?
Margo Robbie (upcoming Wuthering Heights). Dakota Johnson (Persuasion 2022- yuck!), Florence Pugh (Little Women 2019).
Every actress except Mia in The Buccaneers!
I love Karolina Too! We should have a convention of all of us Frock Flick aficionados, with Historic Costume panels, Movie Costume displays, movies, and costume contests! <3
Reality bashers for me are “Jeeves and Wooster,” “Blackadder,” and “The West Wing.”
May I please ask what you mean by ‘Reality Bashers’ ?
Perusing the POV on Flock Flicks to discover Trystan’s discussion of the #Metoo movement and the involvement of Woody, Weinstein, and Polansky. This was published in 2017 and I found it very interesting until I realized that Weinstein, while he has been punished to a point, is still in court today fighting the charges of rape. One would think that by this time he would be done and gone, but, no, His accuser ran out of court last week after Weinstein’s lawyer abused her on the stand. Justice should really work faster and better than this. Let’s hope Weinstein returns to jail soon.
