Jennifer Jason Leigh is our Woman Crush this Wednesday! She’s had a consistent career since the 1980s, with quite a few VERY good historical flicks under her belt! So, let’s check ’em out!

Flesh + Blood (1985)

Costumes are great! Hair is OMG ’80s-tastic! I mean, if I have to pick one or the other, I’ll go with great costumes.

Picnic (1986)

I tried to find a better pic of her in this, but since its a made-for-TV-movie from the ’80s, the quality of every still I was able to track down was horrible.

Last Exit to Brooklyn (1989)

Based on a novel of the same name, the film is set in 1952 during a labor strike in Brooklyn. Leigh plays Tralala, a prostitute, in a film that covers a lot of queer territory.

The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)

Argh! How have I not covered this film??? Leigh plays a character straight out of Rosalind Russell’s playbook — fast talking, dressed immaculately, smart as a whip and won’t take any guff from a man! (Makes mental note to actually do a post about this flick in the near future.)

Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle (1994)

A biopic about Dorothy Parker set during the Prohibition. Costumes look really good.

Kansas City (1996)

Another 1920s flick that came out around the same time as the previous film, with really great costumes by Dona Granata and directed by Robert Altman. I’m honestly a little shocked I haven’t seen it.

Bastard Out of Carolina (1996)

Showtime movie directed by Anjelica Huston, and based on the 1992 novel of the same name. Leigh plays single mother Anney Boatright, raising a child in 1950s South Carolina.

Washington Square (1997)

Damn, I forgot Albert Finney was hot once upon a time.

The Love Letter (1998)

While I have some quibbles with the messy updo’s as far as the hair goes, the outfits in this film look really good!

Road to Perdition (2002)

I 100% forgot that Jennifer Jason Leigh was in this film. To be fair, she’s really not the main focus … It’s a mob flick set in 1931 and starring Tom Hanks.

Kill Your Darlings (2013)

A biopic about Allen Ginsberg (Daniel Radcliffe), set in the 1940s. Leigh plays Naomi, the poet’s neurotic mother.

The Hateful Eight (2015)

I know I watched this film, but I’ll be damned if I can remember anything about it. If you’ve seen one Tarantino film, you’ve kind of seen them all.

LBJ (2016)

I completely didn’t recognize Jennifer Jason Leigh or Woody Harrelson! They play Lady Bird Johnsons and LBJ, respectively.

Hunters (2020-23)

I watched the first season and really wanted to like it, but by the end of the show, I was very much meh about pursuing it any further. Come to find out they made a second season, and Leigh is in it! I may revisit just out of curiosity, but it’s really pushing the limit of our purview here, since its set in the late 1970s.

I remember watching The Love Letter when I was younger. I really liked it, although I had no idea Jennifer Jason Leigh was in it .
