You asked for it, so here’s an occasional open thread to bitch about anything tangentially related to history, costume, movies, or TV shows! Or whatever else is on your mind right now. Note that URLs are automatically held for moderation, but most anything else goes as long as you’re not bitchier than we are!
Summer is chugging along, and we’re rested and ready for more frock flicking! Not a ton of new stuff right now, so maybe we’ll check out some classics? Who knows…
What’s in your queue right now?
Is a full review of the 1995 version of the Buccaneers coming?
Not on the short-list but it’s definitely worth a revisit.
Especially with the 2nd season of the Disasterpiece out now! Thank u lord, for the 3rd season of TGA! BTW What do we think of Mary’s very slinky, very red number?!
“Outrageous” on Britbox is worth watching, and has very wearable outfits!
Has anyone seen the newer version of Caligula? The trailer makes it look amazing, but I’m not sure I want to watch it (run time is 3 hrs). :)
Anyone else watching The Gilded Age season 3? Just finished episode 3 … minor SPOILER …. the ridiculousness of the broken necklace scene! As if the pearls wouldn’t have been individually knotted! I know nothing about historical fashion, but even I know real pearls aren’t strung loose like that. They didn’t buy them at Claire’s!
Omg the pearls! I know they were going for the “strangling marriage, can she break free?” effect, but noooooooo not cheap-ass un-knotted pearls in the 19th-c., not on a girl painted by Seargent & wearing Worth!
“A dangerous friendship” was on french TV, it’s about Anne d’Autriche.
Plot: my young husband (King Louis XIII) is not interested in me. Please, a little help from my bold friend, Mary.
Should be available on Apple TV, Amazon prime and PBS.
Really hoping we get Madfabulous in the states somehow. https://www.madasbirdsfilms.com/madfabulous
Me too!
I remember watching The Buccaneers on Masterpiece Theatre while I was in middle school. I went on to purchase it on vhs and have loved it. I watch this new show as if it Clueless. Loosely based on the same story but not worried about the details. Its like if Gossip Girl time traveled. If someone answered a cell phone I wouldn’t be upset. Also Greg Wise is on the show, so I have to see where this goes now.
Just saw an article about the ridiculous things that celebrities do to fit into a dress, look younger, etc. Based on what I read I think that the notion that wearing a corset is painful is being perpetuated by how they are being used. It is clear that they are being laced too tightly in order to fit into a designer dress or achieve a specific look. As we know that isn’t necessary. However, as roll models to young women it sends a terrible message. Anyway, this is just a pet peeve of mine especially the idea of “no pain, no gain. Have a lovely weekend and stay cool.
