Frock Flicks Guide to Vanity Fair on Screen
Get bookish with these onscreen versions of William Makepeace Thackeray’s novel!
Oh VANITY FAIR (2018), I’d thank you for introducing me to the lovely Olivia Cooke and dressing her in the most exquisitely red dress, but you’d only take advantage of my boyish admiration and make me love you for it.
In all fairness, AD 2018 persuaded me to read the book – which is an amusingly jaundiced piece of work, even without the illustrations – so it must have been doing something right!
At this point I’m most interested in seeing the Witherspoon version (She’s definitely got the vixenish look Mr Thackeray prescribes for his Rebecca, and casting an American actress in the role of English literary icon strikes me as an excellent way to evoke the not-all-proper element of the former Becky Sharp’s background that puts her in such an awkward place, socially speaking).
