Way back when Julie & Julia (2009) came out, I complained (loudly) on my old LiveJournal that I could have done without the modern segments focusing on author Julie Powell on her tedious personal journal through Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and simply indulged in watching Meryl Streep as Julia Child and Stanley Tucci as her husband, Paul Child. “The world needs a proper Julia Child biopic,” I ranted. “I would watch the shit out of that.”
Well, it took 13 years, but HBO Max Productions finally delivered and next week I will get my wish when Julia (2022-) premiers on March 31, dropping the first three episodes of an initial eight-episode first season. Starring Sarah Lancashire as Julia Child, with David Hyde Pierce as Paul, with notables such as Bebe Neuwirth, Isabella Rossellini, and Brittany Bradford rounding out the cast, it looks pretty promising. (Apparently Joan Cusack and Tom Holland were briefly attached to this project early on, which might have worked, but I think Lancashire nails Child’s iconic look and better.) So, considering that I haven’t seen any episodes yet, I’m just going to present some of the preview images for discussion.

Honestly, that’s about all there is out right now in terms of preview images, so we will just have to wait for the show to drop next week! But don’t worry, we will definitely be covering it here!
Are you looking forward to Julia (2022)?
You’ve got captions, but it looks like some of the photos are missing.
Wow I was shocked at the initial casting until I realized it was Tom Hollander, not Tom Holland! That would have been an amazing pairing with Joan, tbh.
Very excited for the show
I had the same thought; “isn’t he a little young for the role?”
I thought the exact same thing! Took me a while to figure out they meant Tom Hollander 😂
As someone who’s watched the ‘Julia without Julie’ edit online more than once, I’m very excited about this. I recently re-watched Down With Love and was reminded how much I enjoy David Hyde Pierce as an actor.
Ditto everything. I’ve never enjoyed AmyAdams less than in “Julie and Julia.”
It was a weird trend of forcing contemporary narratives in historical biographics – same with Madonna’s W.E. If you search on Google “Julia Sans Julie” someone has made an edit of the film though where they cut out all of the Julie scenes so it’s just Meryl and the Tooch being awesome.
Julia Child hated that movie as well.
It’s eminently hateable. also, Julie Powell seems like a nightmare. I watched that with my mom and she kept saying through the whole movie “her poor husband.”
HOWEVER – at least, Meryl Streep had a fabulous midcentury wardrobe. I love that red jacket with the tassels.
I’ll be cooking a lot more after March 31, when I retire, so I can watch this and get Julia in my head and firmly on my shoulder when I try challenging things.
Congrats on your retirement, Frances!!!
I am so pleased for Sarah Lancashire, she’s magnificent in “Happy Valley” and it’s fantastic that she’ll have a much bigger audience to appreciate her.
She was also stellar in “Last Tango in Halifax” before hat show went way, WAY off the rails.
This sounds amazing. David Hyde Pierce has range beyond Frazier, and Sarah Lancashire was a powerhouse in “Happy Valley”. I’m particularly pleased the series has a focus on Paul Child as he was an incredibly supportive spouse to Julia.
I recently watched the 2021 documentary “Julia”. Enjoyed it immensely. :)
Ooooh YES!
Julia without Julie? I’ll be watching my calendar with anticipation.
Until this comes out, someone did actually make a cut of the movie called “Julia without Julie” which does exactly as advertised – cuts out all the modern stuff and just leaves the Julia Child story
Now that’s a perfect movie.
On New Years Eve, I. my husband, and a friend saw the documentary ‘Julia.’ It inspired my friend & I to make Beef bourguignon. It was delicious. A souffle is next. I don’t get HBO, so I won’t be seeing the series. The Magnolia network is airing old episodes of ‘The French Chef.’
I made Julia’s boeuf bourguignon for my parents’ 60th wedding anniversary. It took three days, but it was amazing. I also do her ratatouille recipe, which I highly recommend.
My cousin Susie was an extra in the series! I’ll be looking for her in the background, I saw them filming all over town (Boston) last summer.
To answer your question, yes, I am looking forward to Julia (2022-), but I JUST learned about it right here, right now. David Hyde Pierce is PERFECTION, and I didn’t know how much I needed to see him in this role until just now. The woman cast as Julia looks perfect for the role, but I have to say that I think Joan Cusack would’ve also been perfect for the role. Tom Hollander, though I LOVE him–I’m not so sure about. I never saw Julie and Julia, but it was the very first audiobook that I ever checked out from my library’s streaming audiobook streaming service or something. I checked out the abridged version and even I was wearied by Julie’s project!!
This looks amazing. I had the honor of serving Ms. Child’s decades ago and she was beyond kind and seemed to not notice all the people trying to keep their inner fan inside.
I’m looking forward to it, but I truly think Ms. Streep and Mr. Tucci caught the characters best. they seemed more authentic in terms of speaking voice, looks and acting. but as all I’ve seen is a teaser trailer I’m holding judgement. :-)
It was TOM HOLLANDER who was previously attached, not Tom Holland, aka Spider-Man 😂 . I thought to myself that’s weird, Tom Holland is in his early to mid twenties.
